The Liberal Democratic Party on Wednesday, the 6th of April, 2022 vetted the party's most eligible aspirants to lead the team for the upcoming elections at the Ringway campus of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).
The party’s selection of nominees were set on the top qualification of being a staunch member of the party. Gloria Azumah and Job Kwabena Laboja put themselves up to lead the party for the upcoming national elections after filling the nomination forms successfully, for the flagbearer position.
With laid down plans by the National Executive Committee and the Electoral Commission, Gloria Azumah and Job Kwabena Laboja appeared before a competent vetting panel who were tasked to assess their competencies and abilities before making them available for the public eye. The nominees were vetted based on their appearance, their understanding of the party’s core values, vision and mission, their ability to defend policies, how abreast they are with the current happenings in the country, their understanding of the demands of the position they aspire to hold, their ability to present and give clarification to their ideas, their eloquence, as well as their confidence.
The committee in looking at the eligibility of the aspirants as qualified candidates for the position of the Presidency, were to do so in accordance to the 1992 Constitution and the LDP Constitution. This was to avoid a situation where the eligibility of the party's presidential candidate will be challenged ahead of the elections. Truth be told, it was envisioned that there would not be any major problem for the vetting committee after it had undertaken a background check on both aspirants.
The members on the Vetting Panel were strategically selected from different political parties of past elections who reigned and saw glory. The Party Chairman of U-Congresss, Samuel Swanzy-Baffoe, Flagbearer of the United Socialist Party, Dennis Attuquaye-Fio, Flagbearer of New Development Alliance and the current President Of the Student Representative Council (SRC) of the Ghana Institute of Journalism, Edem Vine Dei-Tutu, were the members of the Vetting Panel.
The aspirants after coming out of the vetting hall, made little or no comment to the media. Although there were few party faithfuls at the venue, the atmosphere was very quiet, depicting the seriousness of the vetting process. The aspirants were then given 24 hours to campaign to delegates of the party, with the motive to petition and convince them that, each of them was the best choice to lead the party to victory in the upcoming elections.
The vetting committee as expected, will be issuing its report to the National Council of the party within a week and it is expected that both aspirants will sail through the process without any hitch. The party through all available channels of communication will be sure to acclaim the flagbearer in due cause.
As a political party, it is known even from our name that we strongly believe in a liberally democratic nation, and in that light, we will continue to champion the course of Ghanaians for the development and betterment of the nation.
